High school students impress with their senior projects

There’s something truly wonderful about watching young people succeed.

This definitely is the case for us as we recently reported on two Seneca Valley students who led impressive, local fundraising events as part of their senior projects.

Corbin Edge on Feb. 26 raised $9,500 — $11,000 before expenses — which significantly surpassed his goal of raising $7,500 for the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Diabetes Association.

Earlier this week, the Eagle reported on what Edge was able to do.

To raise money for his cause, Edge came up with what he called “Pins & Needles Bowl-a-Thon,” which took place at Family Bowlaway in Butler. He brought together more than 100 bowlers and organized a massive basket raffle and bake sale to boot.

The teen even took to a microphone to serve as the announcer for the event, keeping people posted of the happenings the entire time.

A conveniently timed staff outing allowed some Eagle newsroom staff to partake in the event, supporting the basket raffles and buying goodies from the bake sale.

That same day, another Seneca Valley senior, Xander Torrence, led his senior project, a dek hockey tournament. The event raised over $500 for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

It’s great to see this much initiative from our area high school students.

These two really stepped up in a big way for their communities and respective causes. We know this is just the beginning for these teens and look forward to what’s to come.
