Dilbert and Scott Adams defended

I am beyond disappointed that the Butler Eagle has chosen to cancel the Dilbert comic strip because of comments by the creator, Scott Adams. The Butler Eagle editorial of Feb. 28 disparages Adams for creating a comic strip for “those that like to harass geeks” and goes on to describe geeks as “persons with a tendency to study hard, possibly be lacking in social graces and almost certainly white.”

I am an engineer, and within the engineering community, being called a geek is generally considered a compliment — meaning someone who is good at engineering and creates elegant and useful designs. That iPhone in your pocket? Yep, designed by geeks.

Scott Adams is an engineer, and the content of his comics pokes fun at stereotypes, injustices and human nature. The humor is satire, not the spreading of racism or hate as claimed in the editorial. The Butler Eagle didn’t explain that the controversy is about statements made in a video by Adams, not the comic strip. I have to disagree with the Butler Eagle about characterizing his comments in the video as being racist.

Adams commented on the results of a survey that suggested Blacks have a racist attitude toward Whites. His conclusions about this may not be pleasant or politically correct, but he should be entitled to his opinion. I’m tired of seeing all sorts of intelligent and creative people being “cancelled” because what they say doesn’t fit the mainstream narrative or has been deemed misinformation by the Ministry of Truth.
