Cranberry’s Frank gets NCHA honor

ANGOLA, Ind. — Cranberry Township resident and Trine University freshman goaltender Casey Frank has been named to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Women’s All-Freshman Team.

Frank finished the season with a 3.54 goals-against average, .912 save percentage and 739 saves. She broke the program record for most saves in a season and in a game. Frank made 70 saves against Adrian College.

Her 561 saves in NCHA competition led the league.

SRU basketball gets All-PSAC berths

SLIPPERY ROCK — Two members of Slippery Rock University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have received All-PSAC West recognition for their play this season.

Point guard Amante Britt and forward Khalid Gates earned second team honors on the men’s team. Britt averaged 13.4 points and 2.4 assists per game. He is the program’s all-time leader with 115 career games started. Gates averaged 13.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Deleah Gibson and Isabellah Middleton earned second-team honors on the women’s side. Gibson averaged 17 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Middleton averaged 17.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game.

Johnston gets win against 18-1 odds

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Evans City resident Shawn Johnston drove Walkonthemoon to victory against 18-1 odds during harness racing action Thursday at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.

The 5-year-old horse captured an $11,500 Conditioned Trot.

Johnston’s brother, trainer/driver Aaron Johnston, also of Evans City, guided 4-year-old mare Cholula to victory in an $11,500 Conditioned Trot as well.

Blue Ivy, trained and owned by Bill and Renee Bercury of Slippery Rock, won a $12,100 Conditioned Pace to increase the 7-year-old’s career earnings to $736,360.

GCC swimmers net All-PAC recognition

GROVE CITY — ,Slippery Rock graduate Emma Plank and Butler graduate Rachel Ledford were among a number of Grove City College swimmers to receive All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference honors.

Plank and Ledford swam on the Wolverines’ PAC champion 800-meter free relay team. Plank was also runner-up in the 400 individual medley and third in the 1,650 meters. Ledford won the PAC title in the 400 individual medley for the second straight year and took second in the 200 backstroke.

Butler grad Goettler heads to nationals

BUTLER TWP — Butler graduate Laura Goettler, swimming for the University of South Carolina, has qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships in the 400-meter individual medley.

Her qualifying time is 4 minutes, 10.27 seconds. She will also be competing in the 200 individual medley (1:58.16) and 200 breast stroke (2:10.50) through qualifying B time cuts.

The national meet is March 15-18.
