Mary Kovach

Kovach

Mary “Jane” Kovach, 87, of Butler, formerly of Hampton Township, was called to Heaven on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023.

Born March 25, 1935, she was the 12th of 14 siblings of Robert T. and Loretta (Claus) Giel.

Jane married the love of her life, Louis “Bud” Kovach Jr., on Feb. 15, 1958, and they raised five children who were her world, Louis (Cindy), Marilou Hollinger, Mark (Wendy), Lauri Badar (Tim), and Matthew (Jackie).

Jane’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her true joy, Christopher (Tiffany), Bradley, Sheena (Ryan), Justin (Kelsie), Tyler, Elliot (Katie), Allison, Evie, Gianna, Geovani, Annabelle, Ellie Mae and Josiah.

Jane’s family was the center of her universe. For years, Jane and Bud ran Giel’s Market, a hometown favorite grocery. Then, as a young widow, Jane dared to open a saloon, “Calamity Jane’s,” that forged community throughout Etna and served as headquarters for her thriving catering business. Her cooking was amazing, and she shared it generously with all who crossed her path.

In Jane’s retirement, she moved to Butler County, where she enjoyed long drives through the country and sunny days with her sweet pup, Bugger. Jane was never happier than when she could celebrate with family and friends. No matter how big or small the occasion, she reveled in feeding the masses with her famous hot sausage, fried chicken and glazed kielbasa. Cooking was her life and her art.

Mom, we hope you are dancing with the angels and already preparing some heavenly feasts. Rest with God, our dear one.
