Brown scores win in harness racing

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Slippery Rock resident Brady Brown drove Easter Lilly to victory during harness racing action Friday at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.

The 7-year-old mare won a $7,000 Conditioned Trot.

Seneca Valley grads shine in mat tourney

GREENVILLE — Seneca Valley graduates and Washington & Jefferson College wrestlers Hunter Swedish and Nick Funovits fared well at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships.

Swedish won the 133-pound weight class while Funovits took runner-up at 184 pounds. W&J and host Thiel wound up co-champions of the PAC with 105.5 points each.

Pirates pick up 2 more players

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed catcher Kevin Plawecki and left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith as minor league free agents. Both will attend big league camp as non-roster invitees.

Plawecki was a member of Boston’s Opening Day roster for a third straight season last year. He has a .235 lifetime batting average with 22 home runs in 449 major league games.

Smith spent the entire 2022 season with Arizona, going 1-3 with a 4.11 earned run average, 65 strikeouts in 70.1 innings pitched. He has averaged 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in his big league career with the Yankees, Miami Marlins and Arizona.
