Rock basketball swept in Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN — The lead exchanged hands eight times Saturday before the Pitt-Johnstown men’s basketball team put away a 72-68 triumph over Slippery Rock.

The game was also tied on five occasions, the last at 63-63 with 2:47 left, before the Mountain Cats (12-5, 8-3) scored the next five points and never trailed again. SRU (12-5, 6-5) had a chance to take the lead late, but had a pass intercepted by Andrew Shull. Shull drained two free throws to finally ice the win.

Jonathan McFall paced The Rock with 20 points. Amante Britt had 12 points and six assists. Bobby Clifford contributed 10 points and five rebounds while Khalid Gates, playing in foul trouble, had 10 points, six rebounds and blocked three shots.

John Paul Kromka paced UPJ with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Pitt-Johnstown 75, SRU (women) 48 — The Rock (9-8, 4-7) scored only 21 points in the first half. Isabellah Middletown paced SRU with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Deleah Gibson had 10 points, three rebounds and three steals.

Butler graduate Jordan Kauffman scored a career-high nine points while Kennedy Middleton had eight points and three steals.

Ashley Norling led UPJ (11-6, 8-3) with 21 points.

Both Rock teams return home Monday, hosting Lock Haven at Morrow Field House. The women play at 5:30 p.m., the men at 7:30 p.m.
