The Butler Golden Tornado basketball team did not play well against the Ellwood City Wolverines in a home game Feb. 12, 1965, in part because of an ankle injury to center Dick Quigley.

Ellwood City was the “team to beat” in Section 3A that season, which showed when they “squashed” Butler 81-51.

The Wolverines beat Butler 86-82 in a tight game earlier that season in which Quigley was in full form. The Feb. 13, 1965, edition of the Butler Eagle attributed Butler’s loss Feb. 12 to Quigley’s twisted ankle, as well as a flu bug that took out two other players.

The Golden Tornado was within reach of the Wolverines until midway through the third quarter. Butler was down 45-35 at that point, but Ellwood City pulled away, ending the third quarter with a 56-39 lead.

Quigley and teammate Terry Hanratty led Butler with 13 points each.
