SRU women win on last-second layup
ERIE — Kennedy Middleton sank a last-second layup Saturday to give Slippery Rock University a 60-58 women’s basketball road win over Mercyhurst on Saturday.
The Rock (9-6, 4-5) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory. Mercyhurst slipped to 9-6 overall, 5-4 in league play.
Isabellah Middleton led SRU with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kennedy Middleton tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals while Deleah Gibson had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists. Butler graduate Jordan Kauffman had four points, four rebounds and a steal.
Danielle Grim paced the Lakers with 11 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Mercyhurst 81, SRU (men) 51 — Khalid Gates led The Rock (11-4, 5-4) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Jomo Goings came off the bench to gather nine points, four rebounds and two steals.
Jeff Planutis led Mercyhurst (11-2, 7-2) with 23 points.
Both SRU teams host Edinboro on Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.
Prior to the women’s game Wednesday, the family of the late Bobby McGraw — SRU’s women’s basketball coach who died suddenly in July — will be presented a formal letter announcing the creation of the Bobby McGraw Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship will be presented to junior or senior women’s basketball student-athletes pursuing careers in law enforcement who embody the same spirit and passion for SRU as McGraw did.
