Ohio man accused of multiple thefts from Home Depot

Cranberry Township police accused an Ohio man of 11 retail thefts from a Home Depot location last week, according to charging documents.

The store is requesting more than $8,000 in restitution for the stolen items.

John C. Purucker Jr., 69, of Youngstown, Ohio, was charged Friday with four counts of felony retail theft and 18 counts of misdemeanor retail theft for a string of incidents beginning in June 2022.

Police said an employee of Home Depot on Dutilh Road reported the 11 thefts in November 2022, identifying Purucker via surveillance footage.

During the 11 incidents, police said Purucker would arrive at the store and park a white Toyota Tacoma near the lawn and garden section. On nine occasions, Purucker would acquire a shopping cart prior to entering the store near that section.

Purucker left the store with $577 worth of merchandise without paying for it on one occasion in June, according to documents. Among those items were a jet fan blower and Echo gas straight trimmer.

In another June instance, police said Purucker left the store with a $459 pressure washer and placed it inside his vehicle. He then re-entered the store and selected another $61 in merchandise, passed all points of sale, and left the scene.

Police said Purucker repeated this pattern in three alleged thefts in August. Surveillance footage showed Purucker selecting vacuums, tool sets, impact kits, deck cleaner, and more and leaving the store without paying for the items.

Purucker left with $675 worth of merchandise on the first occasion, $1,176 on the second and $822 on the third, according to police. The affidavit said Purucker would select the same items, such as hedge trimmers, vacuums and tool sets, during each of the thefts.

In October, police said Purucker left Home Depot with merchandise on multiple occasions. In each instance, he would take several high-priced items and leave the store passing all points of sale. The totals calculated for the merchandise on those five occasions were $547, $685, $898, $932 and $1,095.

The final alleged theft took place Nov. 5, when footage captured Purucker leaving the store with $746 in merchandise without paying for it, police said.

The total restitution requested amounts to $8,644.

Purucker’s preliminary hearing before District Judge Kevin Flaherty is scheduled for Feb. 3.
