Lessons to be learned from KCHS

Our detachment had the opportunity to attend the veterans luncheon at Karns City Area High School on Nov. 10. The students are to be commended for their participation in honoring area veterans. They are great hosts. In addition to serving a tasty lunch, they also serve as greeters and escorts for the visiting veterans.

We have been attending this a number of years; however, this year we had the honor of participating in a flag folding ceremony that included a reading of the explanation of each of the folds of the flag.

We offer a class aimed at third- and fourth-graders in flag history/etiquette/protocol, and their favorite portion of this class is the flag folding.

Serving as speaker for the detachment, I could not help but take note of the attentiveness of the student body during our presentation. Once we started the flag folding portion of the program, the noise level in the gymnasium dropped next to zero. I couldn’t help but notice that other than the feedback from the PA system microphone, the noise in the gymnasium was so quiet that I could sense my voice echoing off the walls.

One of the members of our flag folding detail and a first time attendee made the comment, “Other schools should take lessons from Karns City.”

I wholeheartedly agree. Detachment #743 salutes the student body of Karns City Area High School.
