Keep the Thanksgiving spirit throughout the year
The leftover turkey is gone. Black Friday is behind us. The holiday season officially has begun.
Although Thanksgiving Day focuses on family, feasts and football, we should continue the spirit of the holiday every day.
We have much to be thankful for, even though it may not be apparent to all of us.
Sure, we all are dealing with inflation, and rising food and gas prices, but, as they say, it always could be worse.
Let’s use the holiday season to focus on the positive. Make an effort to make it a caring, giving season. Check in with a neighbor you don’t often see. Let someone with far fewer grocery items than you cut in front of you in the checkout line. It will improve your outlook to make someone’s life a little bit better — whether it be a big or small gesture.
There are many organizations that need extra help during this time of year. Call your local Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, or hospice organizations to ask if you can help with meal delivery during the holidays. Check with senior living facilities to ask if they accept greeting cards for residents. Explore local food pantries and soup kitchens for opportunities to help out.
Find time for family, including extended family. Call a longtime friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Even if your time is limited, a quick call to let someone know you’re thinking of them will make them — and you — feel great.
Now that the political season and its rancor is over until next year, let’s take a breath and focus on the positive. Make an effort to be kind and thoughtful, not just during the holiday season, but into 2023.
And remember to support local stores and shops this Christmas season.
