Officer saves car from burning garage
Burning brush on a windy day could have turned out worse for a family on Brownsdale Road on Saturday.
Jack Ripper of the Penn Township Police Department heard county 911 dispatchers send fire crews to neighboring Forward Township on Saturday afternoon for a reported carport and attached garage on fire.
Ripper said the family was burning brush and the strong winds blew the embers onto the carport, which then ignited the garage.
Ripper, who arrived before firefighters, grabbed keys from the property owner and entered the two-stall garage, where he saw smoke coming from the attic.
He drove the car out of the garage, and firefighters from Evans City, Penn Township, Callery and Connoquenessing volunteer fire departments arrived on the scene.
Firefighters were unable to save the carport, which was destroyed.
Ripper said the property owners doused the side of the garage with garden hoses until firefighters arrived.
Part of the garage wall and attic were damaged, Ripper said.
There was no damage estimate immediately available.
No one was injured.
