State police in New Castle are investigating a homicide after a Meadville man was found unresponsive along Young Road in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County — near the Butler County line.

Joseph Detello, 40, was found unresponsive around 4:30 p.m. Thursday by a passer-by who stopped to assist with what he thought was a man having issues with his vehicle tire, state police said in a news release.

The passer-by administered CPR and contacted 911. Two other people who were bicycling in the area also stopped to assist until first responders arrived and determined Detello was deceased, police said.

His death was ruled a homicide Friday following an autopsy conducted by the Heritage Valley Medical Center in Beaver. The cause of death was asphyxiation, or suffocation.
