SRU shuts out Clarion, 31-0
CLARION — Slippery Rock made quick work of Clarion in their college football game Saturday at Memorial Stadium — literally.
The Rock’s 31-0 victory — its fourth in a row — took all of two hours and 15 minutes.
“That was the fastest game I’ve ever been involved in, by far,” Rock coach Shawn Lutz said. “They were trying to run the ball, run clock ... They wanted to keep the ball away from our offense.”
With good reason.
SRU (8-1, 5-1) rolled up 533 yards of offense, most of it coming from the arm of quarterback Noah Grover. He completed 27 of 34 passes for 440 yards and three touchdowns. It was his third 400-yard passing game in less than two seasons as SRU’s starting quarterback.
The Rock won the Milk Jug trophy — presented annually to the Clarion-SRU winner — for the 11th time in 12 years.
Grover threw two 14-yard touchdown passes to Kyle Sheets and found Gavyn Barnes from 13 yards out.
“Noah’s playing at a very high level right now,” Lutz said. “I know the guy from Shepherd (Tyson Bagent) is good, but Noah’s playing as well as anybody in the region at this point.”
Grover’s found a go-to receiver as well, connecting with Sheets nine times for 206 yards. Sheets picked up his second consecutive 100-yard receving game.
“They couldn’t stop him, had no answer for Kyle,” Lutz said. “He was continually getting open. He’s elevated himself to one of the best receivers in our league.”
Clarion (3-6, 2-4) was limited to 202 yards offensively. Quarterback Zach Benedek threw for only 62 yards and The Rock defense continued its streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher all season. Nathan Roby led the Golden Eagles’ ground attack with 51 yards.
The 13th-ranked moved into a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC West as Gannon defeated Indiana (Pa.), 43-36, Saturday. SRU closes the Western Division portion of its schedule Saturday, hosting Edinboro at 1 p.m.
If IUP, Gannon and SRU all win this weekend, IUP will win the West via the tiebreaker system and advance to the PSAC Championship Game.
