Traffic study marks progress at dangerous intersection

On Tuesday, we learned there had been a vote to ask the state Department of Transportation for a study on reducing speed limits on a stretch of Route 8 that intersects with Branchton Road.

The intersection has been the site of several accidents over decades, some of which were fatal. The study in question is expected to be complete by mid-November.

In the meantime, the department will install thermoplastic rumble strips on Branchton Road as “an extra measure to physically grab motorists’ attention to the upcoming stop condition.”

While these methods are a step in the right direction, it’s important for motorists to be mindful of their commute, and act accordingly if they know they’ll find themselves at this particular spot.

We often find ourselves preoccupied when driving. Whether it be from our thoughts wandering or our brains pondering the events of the day or working through situations yet to come, we’ve all had a moment where we arrive at our destinations and can scarcely remember the journey there.

Falling victim to our own trains of thought is far harder to change than behaviors that can pull our eyes from the road.

Remember, the text that popped up on your phone is not more important than driving safely. Getting into work a few minutes late is better than someone having to be transported to the hospital, or families losing a loved one. There are very few things worth risking your safety and the safety of others.

If you are in a situation that requires immediate attention, pull over as soon as you can and take the time to remove yourself from the flow of traffic until the situation is resolved.

We commend those involved in the upcoming changes at the intersection and for their efforts to lessen the danger.

Though it will not undo the events of the past, no doubt it will be vital in securing someone’s future.
