Leaf Angel program looks out for neighbors
There are many problems that can be solved without spending taxpayer dollars and without government involvement.
Sometimes just looking out for one another goes a long way. There’s something pure and absolutely wonderful about programs that don’t cost a dime, but still nonetheless make a significant difference in people’s lives.
One such program right here in Butler County is the Cranberry Leaf Angel program.
The seasonal program, organized through Cranberry Township Public Works, matches local volunteers with families living in the township who need help clearing leaves from their yards.
Volunteers are encouraged to visit the Cranberry Township website and sign up via an online form before Nov. 1. They are then assigned to help a resident in need between Nov. 1 and the end of yard waste collection.
Of course, the conclusion of leaf pickup marks the beginning of snow removal, and the township has a very similar program to handle that. The Snow Angel program is a volunteer effort that runs throughout the winter months and assigns volunteers to homes to help with snow removal.
It’s just good, old fashioned neighbors helping neighbors, but it works and it makes the community a better place for everyone.
According to an article published recently in the Butler Eagle, the programs were spurred by initiatives meant to help seniors in need amid the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial efforts helped with grocery shopping, but the efforts continued with leaf and snow cleanups — something we’re happy to see.
Last year, more than 40 people signed up for assistance through the Leaf Angel program, and more than 100 benefited from the Snow Angel program.
We look forward to seeing the impact of the program this year and hope to see similar initiatives — formal or informal — in other communities.
Look out for your neighbors. It makes a difference.
