Brick of heroin leads to felony charges in city

A Butler man is facing felony charges for contraband after police said more than a brick of heroin was found in his possession.

Butler city police charged Eric L. Powers, 40, on Thursday with felonies contraband and drug sales following the incident.

Powers was arraigned at 9:30 p.m. Thursday before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz and placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bond.

According to the affidavit, police and medical personnel responded to the YMCA in Butler for a call about an unresponsive male who had been in a bathroom near the main lobby for over an hour.

Police said they found Powers on the bathroom floor with a syringe, two phones and a black bag beside him. Police said nine bags of heroin were found on the bathroom sink.

When Powers revived, he refused medical treatment, police said. He was taken into custody after police discovered he was in violation of seven bench warrants filed with the Butler County Sheriff Office.

The investigating officer said that prior to entering the jail, Powers denied having drug paraphernalia on his person. Police said a search found three bags of heroin in Powers’ front pants pocket.

In addition, police said 53 stamp bags of heroin, a digital scale, and three empty stamp bags were discovered in a glove inside the black bag.

A brick of heroin is about 50 stamp bags.

According to charging documents, Powers told police he had found the black bag, and later told a corrections officer he had a debit card still inside it. Police said a card with Powers’ name was found inside the bag.

Powers will appear before District Judge William T. Fullerton for a preliminary hearing, which has not been scheduled.
