Alda E. Barr

Barr

Alda E. “Nan” Barr, 95, of Scottdale, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, at Walden’s View of North Huntingdon.

She was born April 6, 1927, in Cabot, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Edna Jahing Wetzel.

She was a longtime and faithful member of Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Scottdale.

She was a graduate of Winfield High School, and Slippery Rock University in 1934.

She began her teaching career at Scottdale Joint High School, and finished her career at Southmoreland School District with 39 years of service.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Marion Lodge and Silver Sneakers.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, crossword puzzles, dancing, bowling, taking bus trips and day trips, and sitting on the porch having dinner. She also held a membership at Bullskin Senior Citizens Organization, and had contributed to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital and WQED TV stations of Pittsburgh for children.

“Our Mother’s strength and determination carried her through all of life’s challenges. She loved her family and daily life.” This is where you could find her — knee deep in the flowers, or walking in town, visiting neighbors, playing bingo, bowling, sitting on the porch, and frequenting local establishments. She loved teaching and being a mother.

Nan is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Her loving and devoted children include Sherry and her husband, Kevin Fowler, of Scottdale, and Donna Rae Brown and her husband, Charles, of Jacksonsville, N.C.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Donald Fowler and his wife, Tabetha, of Belton, Texas, Brian Fowler and his partner, Anthony Lima Fowler, of Appalachian, N.Y., Anna Marie Stanley and her husband, William, of Hubert, N.C., and Jonathon Beck and his wife, Lynne, of Branchburg, N.J.; her great-grandchildren, Tori White and her husband, Austin, of Belton, Texas, Lexi Enriquez and her husband, Amiel, of Texas, and Lucas, Zachary and Jace Beck of Branchburg, N.J.; her great-great-grandchildren, Holland White and Kailani Enriquez; her two sisters, Violet Ruth Wetzel of Saxonburg and Jean Wetzel of Saxonburg; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Nan was preceded in death by her first husband, John Miller Beck, who passed away in March of 1954; her second husband, Donald R. Barr, whom she married on March 28, 1958, and who passed away on Jan. 20, 1988; her son, John Clarke Beck, who passed away April 28, 2010; her five sisters, Elizabeth Young, Delsie Montgomery, Twila Fink, Leonice Cypher and June Golojuh; and her three brothers, Wilfred “Bill” Wetzel, Irving Wetzel and Earl Wetzel.
