William West

West

William J. West, 92, of Butler, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 16, 2022, at the Butler Memorial Hospital.

Bill was born in Butler on Nov. 26, 1929, a son of the late Fred G. West and Mildred (Schneider) West.

He graduated from Butler High School in 1947, and then enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1949. Bill then went on to enroll Grove City College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1954. He later graduated from the University of Virginia’s School of Consumer Banking.

Bill worked for Mellon Bank for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He joined Citizens National Bank in 1986, where he served as manager of the Clearview Mall branch until 1991. He also had been a tipstaff for the Butler County Courthouse for several years.

Bill was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, where he had been an usher, and was a member of the BPOE Elks 170 in Butler. Bill enjoyed all sports, especially golf, having belonged to the Mellon Bank and the Elks golf leagues. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles and traveling to various casinos. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving is his loving wife and best friend of 67 years, Shirley A. (Fend) West, whom he married June 4, 1955; three children, Susan Geibel of Trinity, Fla., William J. (Karen) West of Tampa, Fla., and Thomas R. (Shelley) West of Trinity, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Kelley (Brian) Cummings of Land O Lakes, Fla., Rebecca (David) Soldinger of Van Nuys, Calif., Jeffrey West, Krista (Ricky) Patel, Lauren West, Preston West and Blake West, all of Tampa, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patsy Jacob and Winnie Ford; and two brothers, John West and Michael (Patty) West.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters and two brothers.

WEST — Services are private for William J. West, who died Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, and will be held by his family.
