Summit Township getting $100K in grant money

SUMMIT TWP — Township supervisors made an agreement with Butler County to receive $100,132 through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) on Wednesday.

Supervisor chairman Willie Adams said the municipality typically gets a consistent amount each year through the grant.

The supervisors plan to distribute CDBG money to residents who applied for money to cover the mandatory tap-in fee included in the public sewage system proposed to be installed in the township.

“We have it earmarked for the tap-in fees so it helps out our residents,” Adams said. “It’s pretty close to what we got last year.”

The supervisors may also review a fee schedule that would charge fees for “false alarms.”

Dave Berry, township emergency management coordinator, said the township has received around 20 emergency calls in recent months that turned out to be false alarms.

Berry said he looked at a false alarm fee schedule in place in Forward Township, which could serve as a basis for a fee list in Summit.

The township supervisors agreed they would like to consult the township solicitor before discussing a possible fee schedule any further.

In other business, supervisor Richard Green asked if the Herman Volunteer Fire Company could host a blood drive in the near future to help fill a national blood shortage. Rob McLafferty, Herman VFC chief, said the department would be willing to host a drive, and that in the past, it has gotten a good response for similar efforts.
