Ex-Butler resident wins World Golf

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Former Butler resident Frank Pinto shot rounds of 74, 75, 73 and 71 to win the mid-senior flight of the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Golf Championship over the weekend.

Pinto bested a field of 50 participants, enabling him to advance to the fifth-day finals with all 62 flight winners. Nearly 3,200 golfers played in this year’s event.

It is the third time in 18 years Pinto won his flight. He now resides in Leland, N.C.

Rock QB Grover Player of Week

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University quarterback Noah Grover has been named PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week.

Grover completed 20 of 28 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns in three quarters of play during SRU’s 42-10 win over Wayne State (Mich.).

SR’s Brown wins with Rising MVP

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Slippery Rock resident Brady Brown drove Rising MVP to victory during harness racing action Friday at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.

The 7-year-old gelding won an $11,000 Conditioned Tot. It was the horse’s 39th career victory.

SRU’s Abdalah gets cross country honor

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior Marianne Abdalah has been named PSAC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

Abdalah took second overall at the Doug Watts Open, hosted by Edinboro, leading The Rock to an upset win over the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region on its home course. She covered the 6,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 33 seconds.
