Adams approves Sheetz liquor license transfer
ADAMS TWP — The Sheetz under construction at the intersection of Route 228 and Three Degree Road cleared a hurdle on the path to selling alcoholic beverages after the township board of supervisors approved its liquor license transfer at a special meeting Monday.
The transfer was approved 2-1 with one abstention. Supervisor Ron Nacey voted no due to concerns about the proximity of the Sheetz to the Mars Area School District campus. The Sheetz at 1000 Dori Drive is across the street from Mars Area middle and high schools.
Board chairman Russ Ford abstained due to not being present for the public hearing.
At a public hearing held Aug. 9, attorney Mark Kozar of Flaherty and O’Hara explained that the company has a universal card-checking policy for all customers who purchase alcohol.
“This policy removes any gray area from the sales associates. They card everybody,” Kozar said at the Aug. 9 meeting. “Sheetz uses a card scanner to verify the age of the person, and these card scanners will also detect fake cards.”
The Sheetz plans to open up toward the end of September, Kozar said Monday.
“It’s very close to being done,” he said.
Alcoholic beverages will not be sold immediately upon opening, Kozar said, as the store is awaiting official approval from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, which could take around a month and a half or more to complete.
“It takes the PLCB 90 to 120 days to do their thing,” Kozar said. “Before COVID, we used to always say 60 days was the maximum.”
Beer and wine are the only alcoholic beverages sold at Sheetz locations. All Sheetz employees receive training to prepare them for selling alcohol or dealing with potentially intoxicated customers.
