Upcoming fundraiser already nearing capacity
The Jean B. Purvis Community Health Center hasn’t even sent out invitations to its annual fundraiser dinner, but the November event has nearly sold out.
Jim Cunningham, director of development at the health center, said Signature Sensations was a runaway success last year, filling its 200-person capacity and raising more than $94,000 for the nonprofit.
Signature Sensations started in 2012 when organizers came up with the concept, which Cunningham said was unique at the time. The event brings together several local restaurants that each supply a course for a meal — typically six — and the courses are paired with wine. Cunningham said all of the participating eateries donate their food and time.
Cunningham said Chris Fennimore of WQED Cooks again will be a personality at the event.
“With each course a chef from the facility is providing the food, stands up there with Chris and describes how to make it,” Cunningham said. “It's a pretty sophisticated program.”
In addition to the food, the event features raffle baskets and an auction, which Cunningham said also raises money for the health center.
There are still a handful of tickets left for Signature Sensations. Cunningham said the support for the community health center is always demonstrated through Signature Sensations, and it is able to continue operating purely through donations.
“Every dime we operate on is from charitable gifts, grants, and we don't charge anything to our patients,” Cunningham said. “We set our goals on budgetary needs and the last three years in a row we have been in the black.”
Despite tickets always going fast for the event, Cunningham said its planners decided to keep it at the Butler Country Club because of the atmosphere it offers.
“I don't think it would have the same feel if we moved,” Cunningham said.
Tickets for Signature Sensations cost $125 per person. They can be purchased by contacting Jim Cunningham at 724-841-0980 ext. 101.
