Traffic stop for missing juvenile results in car theft arrest

A Maryland man who was pulled over by police in Butler County because the car he was driving matched the description of one related to a missing juvenile girl was arrested after police discovered the car had been reported stolen.

Mekhi Laren Mackey, 19, of Crisfield, Md., was charged with a felony charge of receiving stolen property after police pulled him over Aug. 11 on Interstate 79 in Jackson Township, according to state police.

Mackey is being held in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail. His preliminary hearing before District Judge Amy M. Marcinkiewicz has not been scheduled as of Friday.

State police in Pittsburgh notified area law enforcement that a vehicle related to a missing or endangered juvenile girl was traveling north on I-79 into Butler County, police said in an affidavit.

Jackson Township police conducted a traffic stop on the black 2021 Chevrolet Malibu with a Maryland license plate, and determined the car had been reported stolen to Maryland State Police, according to the affidavit.

Township police removed Mackey and a juvenile male from the car by the time state police arrived. Police received permission to search the car for the missing girl, but the search results were negative.
