Retired Catholic priest waives preliminary hearing in abuse case

An 84-year-old, retired Catholic priest from West Virginia waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday related to accusations that he sexually assaulted a boy in Center Township.

Perry Malacaman, of Beckley, W.Va., had been brought to the district court from Butler County Prison, where he has remained in lieu of $200,000 bond.

Malacaman is charged with two felonies, corruption of minors and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a minor, as well as misdemeanor indecent assault.

The charges accuse Malacaman of sexually abusing a boy for a period of five years when he was between the ages of 9 and 14. The boy is now 18.

Malacaman is identified as a former priest at the St. Francis de Sales Church in West Virginia.

Malacaman is represented by the Butler County Public Defender’s office, and he is scheduled to appear next for formal arraignment Oct. 11 in Butler County Common Pleas Court.
