Number of people injured in Riding For Cure crash

No updates were available Sunday regarding the Westmoreland County crash Saturday that saw multiple motorcyclists participating in Riding For the Cure hospitalized.

Allegheny Township Police in Westmoreland County did not release any details about the crash Sunday.

In an earlier statement to multiple media outlets, Allegheny Township Police Chief Duane Fisher said arriving officers were told that one rider went down after going around a curve, and other bikes coming upon the downed motorcycle were caught up in the crash.

State police from the Westmoreland County barracks confirmed they were not involved in the crash response.

Based on some reports the day of the incident, at least eight motorcyclists were injured in an accident around 1:05 p.m. near Lynch Road between Hulton and Leechburg roads.

Four riders were flown to Pittsburgh area hospitals, while four others were taken via ambulance.

No deaths have been reported as a result of the crash, but the road remained closed for hours following the incident.

The 11th annual Riding For the Cure motorcycle ride began at 11 a.m. Saturday, launching from the 11th Frame Bar and Grille parking lot in Butler.

On its Facebook page, Riding For the Cure announced the crash and called for people to “please keep those involved in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those that are continuing.”

As of Sunday evening, the post had been shared more than 120 times, received more than 460 comments and been liked more than 600 times. Most of those “likes” were in the form of the “care” emoji, which typically designates sympathy and compassion.

One person who commented was Erica Blake of Eau Claire, who said she and her husband have ridden in the event for in all but two of the past 11 years.

“Prayers for everyone involved in the accident,“ she said. “This is the first time that anything like this has happened.”

Blake said despite the crash, she and her husband will be back for the ride next year.

“Anyone that rides on two or three wheels knows there are risks involved and anything can happen in a split second,” Blake said. “This ride is for an amazing cause for local cancer patients and their families.”

Last year, the ride provided the Butler Health System Foundation a $60,080.25 check to assist cancer patients in Butler County.

According to the organization, it has raised more than $376,500 and donated more than $281,000 to the foundation since it formed in 2012.
