Zelienople man accused of strangling and multiple threats

According to police, a Zelienople man threatened all involved in a night that ended with his arrest for allegedly strangling his mother.

Zelienople police filed charges last week against Derek L. Linkenheimer, 26, including felony strangulation and misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, simple assault, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.

Following his arraignment by District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz, he was placed in Butler County prison in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Police said officers arrived around 9:37 p.m. to the home Linkenheimer shares with his parents. Police said two 911 reports were made, one by each of Linkenheimer’s parents, claiming their son was having mental health problems, was using marijuana and had choked his mother.

Police said both parents reaffirmed their stories at the scene, and Linkenheimer’s mother was evaluated by an ambulance at the scene. Police said she refused transport for treatment.

Police said while talking with Linkenheimer, he behaved and spoke erratically, and he offered officers his version of events.

“He stated that his mother was blocking his path to the bathroom, and he attempted to push past her and may have moved her,” police said.

Police said through much resistance, Linkenheimer was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of the police cruiser, where he continued to resist, yelling and trying to kick out the window.

“While en route, Derek was making statements about slicing my throat and shooting me, my family members and others in the head,” said the arresting officer. “At the station, Derek continued his rant about wanting my family members to die, naming each one individually and the method in how he was going to kill them.”

Police said Linkenheimer was warned his statements would be recorded on the cruiser’s surveillance but proceeded anyway.

Police said Linkenheimer continued to verbally threaten the lives of others.

“When I advised him that he was going to jail and would see a judge in the morning, Derek stated that he was going to kill the judge,” police said. “He then asked me if he could kill the guards at the jail, and I advised him he could not.”

Police said Linkenheimer later became unruly in his cell, and they needed to Taser him in order to recuff him .

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday before Marcinkiewicz.
