Former Steelers WR Johnson dies
Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Charles Johnson has died at the age of 50, the University of Colorado, his alma mater, confirmed Wednesday.
A cause of death was not announced.
After starring for the Buffaloes, he was selected 17th overall by the Steelers in the 1994 NFL Draft.
He would go on to tally 247 receptions for 3,400 yards and 15 touchdowns in his five seasons in Pittsburgh, which included a trip to Super Bowl XXX against Dallas.
The best season of his career came with the Steelers in 1996, when he caught 60 passes for 1,008 yards.
He went on to play two seasons for Philadelphia (1999-00) and one year with New England when he helped the Patriots win Super Bowl XXXVI.
He closed his career with Buffalo in 2002.
Johnson was employed as the assistant athletic director at Heritage High School in Wake Forest, N.C., for the last several years.
