Zelienople considers 2 grant applications
Zelienople officials will seek state funds for two projects aimed at improving safety and beautifying the borough.
During a borough council meeting Monday, manager Don Pepe sought discussion over whether the borough should apply for one grant to make pedestrian safety improvements and a vote on applying for another grant for Zelienople’s Main Street revitalization project.
The pedestrian project, which Zelienople hopes will be funded at least in part by a state Automated Red Light Enforcement, or ARLE, Grant, would help with signalization of pedestrian intersections.
“It's very visible and a very in-your-face type of signal,” Pepe said. “You can't miss it, unless you're blind, and if you're blind you shouldn't be driving anywhere.”
One possibility would be for pedestrian traffic on Main Street, while another possibility would be for walkers near St. Gregory Catholic School. Pepe said there’s more pedestrian traffic along Main, but there’s always the component with St. Gregory of children walking to and from the school.
On Monday evening, police chief Jim Miller also brought up the possibility of adding signals to the intersection of South Clay and West Beaver streets due to some car-on-pedestrian collisions there in the recent past.
Pepe also asked council to approve an application for a Department of Community and Economic Development Multimodal Grant for the fourth phase of the borough’s Main Street revitalization project.
Phase 4 would finish out the borough’s streetscape project, bringing the project all the way through Four Corners Park on Zelienople’s northern end.
