SR Twp talks mineral extraction, intersection
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Slippery Rock Township supervisors approved the conditional use of land at New Castle Road and Conroy Lane for mineral extraction at their meeting Monday night.
Supervisors also provided an update regarding the Route 8 and Branchton Road intersection.
According to solicitor Brian Farrington, a public hearing was held May 23 to discuss the conditional use of the site where the Allegheny Mineral plans to extract limestone. At the hearing, many residents expressed concern about the environmental impact on the land and surrounding homes.
“Mineral extraction is allowed in rural conservation and light industrial zones,” he said.
The conditions set in place include exploring options for dulling noise from the active site and having PennDOT evaluate the safety of the intersection with added traffic.
The conditional use was unanimously approved.
Supervisors discussed a resident’s letter about putting rumble strips near the intersection of Branchton Road and Route 8 to slow traffic and reduce accidents.
Supervisor Paul Dickey said an electric speed sign was set up last week to slow drivers heading north on Route 8.
“We discussed rumble strips at our meeting (with PennDOT), it was not dismissed. Whether or not we go there, I don’t know, but the people living there must be considered, because of the noise they’ll have to deal with,” he said. “With the electric sign, they’re doing some of the things they suggested.”
Christina Gibbs, community relations coordinator at PennDOT, said the ‘speed minder’ was up from May 24 to June 8.
“We place speed minders to remind motorists of the existing posted speed limit and to show them the speed that they are traveling,” she said. “In areas where speeding is an issue, they do tend to slow people down but are only effective in a specific location for a week or two so we move them around to different locations as needed.”
