Adams board discusses Route 228 construction plans

ADAMS TWP — Widening work on the section of Route 228 between Quality Gardens and the Adams Area Fire District building is projected to take about four years, board members explained at a township meeting Monday night.

The $50 million dollar project will bring Route 228 up to four lanes. All of the traffic lights along the section of road will be equipped with license plate recognition cameras, which allow police to track license plates and are in use at some of the township’s other traffic lights.

Township manager Gary Peaco said that in a meeting he and board chairman Russ Ford attended last week with PennDOT, he learned that contracts are scheduled to be awarded by PennDOT later this year. Some construction, primarily on utility work, will begin in 2023, followed by some offline work before mainline work will begin.

“Hopefully it goes as planned, and we are done in four years,” Peaco said.

Other construction

Supervisor Ron Shemela gave an update about the ongoing Three Degree Road construction. Work began on phase one of the project at the end of May.

“I would say that by the end of this week, phase one will be complete,” Shemela said. “We are going out to bid for phase two, and we will open those bids at the next meeting.”

Parks and recreation director Haley Zaliponi said that the Adams Township Community Park’s ongoing summer projects continue to move along. The pickleball fields in the park should be ready within the next few weeks, she said.

“Everything is still progressing,” she said. “We’re going to open the courts up; they are laying the posts right now, and that’s public works. The nets and everything should be up by next week, so we’re going to open that for play.”
