Butler Memorial Park, the main pool, on June 13 1966. Butler Eagle file photo

With the stifling heat wave and opening several public pools, including the county’s Alameda Park’s pool Tuesday evening, it’s not hard to believe that summer has hit Butler County.

This photograph was one of dozens commemorating a packed pool day at Memorial Park in Butler on June 13, 1966.

The photo’s caption, “how to wear out the seat of a bathing suit,” was accompanied by shots of children playing, splashing and swimming in the water with their parents and friends.

The pool has been closed since 2004, and the demolition process for the swimming area and accompanying building began last December.

The plan is to make the former pool site a green space in the park.
