Blauser 3-time winner in D-9 track

Reversing Fortunes

BROOKVILLE - Baylee Blauser was determined to reverse her fortunes at the District 9 Class 2A track and field championship meet.

Did she ever.

A year ago, Blauser was favored to win a district crown in both the long and triple jumps, but a sprained ankle kept her out of the triple jump competition and severely held her back in the long jump, in which she managed a leap more than two feet shorter than what she was capable of.

Friday, the senior was healthy and earned three wins at Brookville High School, taking both jumps and the 100-meter dash.

“It feels amazing,” Blauser said after her final win of the day in the triple jump, achieved with a distance of 37 feet, six inches. “I’m really happy I was able to come in here and show what I can do. I knew I had it in me to win both jumps. That was my goal.”

The 100 dash was another story. Blauser beat out Cranberry’s Laiyla Russell by .07 seconds to win that title.

“I didn’t think I’d be No. 1 on the podium for that. She’s really good and I was just trying to stay with her. We were even and I just kicked it in at the end.”

Blauser won the long jump with a leap of 17-10.

Karns City’s girls 4x100 relay team turned in its best time of the season (51.65) to win the district title.

The quartet included Ashley Fox, Natalie Hess, McKenna Martin and Rossi McMillen.

“All of us had good runs,” said Fox. “This is what we’ve been working for since day one.”

The same girls placed second in the event to Brookville at last week’s Redbank Valley Invitational. Friday, KC finished ahead of runner-up Johnsonburg and Brookville.

“It’s always in my head for us to come here and win the 4x100. I love the sprint events,” said KC coach Roger King. “We tell the girls at the start of the season they need to be committed to each other. We can’t ask for more than what the kids showed today.

“I’m so happy, not for me, but for them.”

Blauser was just one of four athletes from the A-C Valley/Union co-op to win titles.

Hayden Smith took the boys high jump, Landon Chalmers the discus and Dawson Camper the shot put.

Smith was the defending high jump champion, going 6-4 last year. He jumped 6-5 Friday, though he owns Union’s school record at 6-9.

A steady rain was falling during Friday’s competition.

“I tried to not let it phase me, but it was bad,” the sophomore said.

When asked of his goals at the state meet, Smith looked up, smiled and said: “Winning a state title ... that would be crazy.”

Chalmers’ heave of 161-4 in the discus was over 10 feet better than his previous best.

“I didn’t think I’d throw as far as I did. I was going for 155 or so today. I knew I had a chance to win here at the start of the season, but just focused on getting better every meet,” he said.

Camper won the shot put with an effort of 49 feet, 1/2 inch.

Several Butler County-area athletes qualified for the state meet by placing second in their respective events. Moniteau’s Cody Daniels was among them. His time of 15.71 seconds in the 110 hurdles missed out on first place by just .01 seconds as Punxsutawney’s Tyler Elliott finished in 15.70.

“I thought I had him at first, but watched a video my coach took right after the race and it was clear I was second,” said Daniels. “It was frustrating to lose like that, but I was also relieved. It was a pretty big improvement on my personal record (previously 15.88). I was hoping to go 15.8.”

Karns City’s Luke Cramer settled for runner-up in the javelin. He is dealing with a pulled hamstring, suffered last week.

“My goal today was just get to states,” he said. “I think I can be healthy for the state meet (which begins next Friday). I will do some light workouts, but will have to keep up with the therapy over the next few days.”
