Johnston guides

horse to upset win

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Evans City resident Shawn Johnston drove Justabitofcharm, at 13-1 the longest shot in the field, to an upset win in a $5,400 Claiming Pace during harness racing action Saturday at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.

The 6-year-old mare picked up her first win in 14 starts this season.

Messer, Edkins

get baseball honors

LOCK HAVEN — Slippery Rock University baseball coach Jeff Messer has been named PSAC West Baseball Coach of the Year and Rock pitcher Ethan Edkins Freshman of the Year.

Messer took home his seventh PSAC Coach of the Year honor after leading SRU to a 33-16 overall mark, 17-11 in the PSAC West. Edkins was 6-1 with a 3.16 earned run average. Catcher Connor Hamilton, outfielder Alex Rebenolt, pitcher Devin Dunn, and designated hitter Eddie Morris made first team All-PSAC West.

SRU pitchers Ricky Mineo, a Slippery Rock High School graduate, and Luke Trueman made second team All-PSAC West. Trueman made the team as a utility player.

PSAC West berths

LOCK HAVEN — Butler graduates Nash Bryan and Justin Stewart have earned All-PSAC West honors in baseball this season.

Bryan, a senior at Seton Hill, made first team as a relief pitcher. He is 3-4 with a 2.43 earned run average, 11 saves, 48 strikeouts and nine walks in 29.2 innings pitched. Stewart is a senior catcher at California (Pa.) and made second team. He hit .289 with four homers and 21 RBI.

softball All-PSAC

LOCK HAVEN — Four former Butler County athletes have received All-PSAC West honors in softball this season.

Moniteau graduate Kristina DeMatteis, a third baseman at Gannon, and Freeport graduate Allison Dejidas, a Mercyhurst outfielder, made first team. Slippery Rock graduate Cheyenne Hindman, a third baseman for Mercyhurst, and Moniteau graduate Kennedy DeMatteis, a pitcher at Gannon, made second team.

Kristina DeMatteis hit .351 with two homers and 11 RBI. Kennedy DeMatteis was 6-6 with a 2.70 ERA, 30 strikeouts in 36.1 innings pitched. Hindman hit .329 with three homers, 27 RBI and 10 doubles, Dejidas .329 with eight homers, 45 RBI and 13 doubles.

LOCK HAVEN — Two Slippery Rock University softball players have received All-PSAC West honors.

Designated hitter Mackenzie Freeman, a sophomore, made first team. Uitility player/[pitcher Alexa Hurd, a freshman, made second team.
