6-2 victory over Hampton gives Mars outright title

Planets baseball wins section

The Mars baseball team grabbed a Section 2-5A title with a 6-2 triumph on the road at Hampton Tuesday. Matt Mroz started on the mound for the Planets and turned in five innings of work, punching out eight Talbot batters and allowing only one walk.

Jake Johnson led the way offensively, driving in two runs and coming across twice himself. Johnny Fratto, Zach Orosz, and Ty Garver all notched an RBI, as well.

Mars will close out its regular season schedule with a home tilt against Blackhawk Thursday.

Butler 11, Knoch 1 — The Golden Tornado’s offense had a banner night against the non-conference foe Knights.

Colin Patterson and Cooper Baxter both hit homers in the five-inning win, while Lance Slater, James Desmond, and Madden Clement each had doubles. Butler totaled a dozen hits.

Softball

Freeport pitchers Sydney Selker and Autumn Powell combined to no-hit visiting St. Joes in an 11-0 home victory on Tuesday.

Four different Yellowjacket girls — including Natalie King and Jenna Selker — recorded extra-base hits. Abby DeJidas and Sydney Selker both tripled and singled, and the latter added three innings in the circle. Selker also fanned seven.

Knoch 9, Greensburg Salem 0 — Lindsay Edwards and Sennett Purcell both had multi-hit performances in this Knights shutout win.

Fox Chapel 5, Butler 3

The Golden Tornado finished the season by bowing in a non-section home matchup with the Foxes. Even with a dominant performance by the visitors’ Mackenzie Borkovitch, who struck out 17 batters and allowed only two hits, Butler forced an extra inning.

Forest Area 12, Allegheny-Clarion Valley 1 — The Falcons dropped this one in six frames as the visiting Fires racked up 20 knocks. Mackenzie Parks spent 5.2 innings in the circle and hit a solo home run in the third in the defeat.

A-C Valley will close its schedule at Clarion next Wednesday.

The undefeated Karns City’s boys track and field team claimed a KSAC crown in a dominating showing against North Clarion. Levi Hawk, Griffin Booher, Noah Mourer, Braden Slater, Micah Rupp, and Luke Cramer all won multiple events.

The Gremlin girls saw Natalie Hess (400-meter relay, long jump), Rossi McMillen (400 relay, high jump), and Leah Wilson (triple jump, pole vault) all chip in and win a pair of events, but the effort fell just short of a team victory.

North Clarion won on a tie-breaker.

Volleyball

Butler won the first and third sets and battled for five in its visit to Fox Chapel Tuesday night. The Golden Tornado (7-7) lost by scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-19, 25-18, 20-18.

Cam Ray had 32 assists, Max Gianneski 15 kills, and Tyler Figlioli 12 digs in the losing effort.

Butler plays Seneca Valley at home on Thursday night.
