Hot bats lead Mars to win over Knoch

With significant section series looming for both, Knoch and Mars took a break from league play and met at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park Friday night.

An impressive third frame in which they notched half a dozen knocks and batted around propelled the Planets to a 10-4 baseball triumph.

“Every person one through nine got a hit,” Mars coach Jason Thompson said of his offense’s overall effort. “The RBIs were spread out. There were a lot of triples.”

Four, to be exact.

Zack Orosz and Nate Leshinsky slapped back-to-back three-baggers with one away in that six-run third inning. Moments later, Shane Kleinfelter added another triple — this one after Knoch’s Braden Kriley walked the bases full. It soared all the way to the right field fence and plated three runs.

“(We) threw it down the middle and they hit rockets on us,” Knights coach Bill Stoops simply put it.

With Isaac Roddy’s two-RBI single, Knoch cut the guests’ advantage to three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mars’ Thompson asked for a prompt response and his Planets obliged.

“You can’t let good teams stick around,” Thompson said.

Mars filled the base paths before Leshinsky approached the dish. The senior catcher recorded his second triple of the day and rounded home on an error, tacking another four runs to the scoreboard.

“Again, (it was) up and down through the lineup,” Thompson said. “That’s where I’m proud of the guys. It’s not one guy. It’s not two. They pick up off each other.”

The Knights will play in a pivotal Section 1-4A series with North Catholic starting on Monday. The home-and-home will help decide who takes the league title.

Mars next plays a conference game at home against Penn Hills Monday.
