Cranberry Twp man accused of stabbing father

Police said a Cranberry Township man was charged Tuesday with attempted homicide after stabbing his father.

“He admitted it was an unprovoked action, and his intent was to kill his father,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

Adams Township police arrested Richard J. Myers, 31, shortly after 6 p.m. Monday from his father’s home in their jurisdiction, after which they filed charges including felony counts of attempted homicide and aggravated assault, as well as misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

Myers’ father survived the stabbing, but his condition is unknown.

Following Myers’ arraignment Tuesday morning by District Judge Kevin O’Donnell, he was placed in Butler County Prison without bond.

In court documents, O’Donnell said Myers presented a “threat to the victim’s family and the community” as the reason for no bond being set.

According to charging documents, police found Myers’ father standing outside the Adams Township home with an apparent stab wound. The father also claimed Myers threw the knife at him after the stabbing.

“When he fled the residence, Myers threw the knife down the stairs of the basement at (his father,)” police said.

Myers is scheduled to appear May 3 for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz.
