Butler strands bases loaded in 7th frame

Tornado offense struggles in 2-0 loss

Butler pitchers Mac Schnur and James Desmond combined to allow just two runs on three hits over 6 1/3 innings, but the Golden Tornado were unable to score in a 2-0 loss to Pine-Richland at Pullman Park Thursday night.

The Rams (5-6, 4-2) scored the game’s first run off of Schnur in the top of the fourth inning.

Anthony Mangine singled and took two bases on an errant pick-off attempt.

After one out, he scored when Avery Brown reached on a throwing error, one of four Butler miscues in the game.

After Keegan Diehl relieved Rams’ starter Jacob McGuire at the start of the seventh, Butler was on the verge of reversing its fortunes.

With one out, Ethan Trettel, Kyle Yost and Liam McElroy each drew a walk to load the bases and Diehl was relieved by freshman Tristan Farrar. He struck out Lance Slater and got Cooper Baxter to fly out to end the game.

“He’s a freshman, but has excelled in situations like that,” said P-R coach Kurt Wolfe. “He closed out both games against Seneca Valley for us and doesn’t let anything phase him.”

The Golden Tornado (8-2, 4-2) found scoring chances hard to come by against McGuire. The junior walked four, but allowed just two hits and struck out seven in six innings.

Butler did have a golden opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and Brady Gavula on second base after a double, Trettel hit a hard grounder to first baseman Tyler Armstrong, who blocked the ball with his body and it bounced several feet in front of him.

McGuire, who broke toward first on contact, scooped the ball up and ran to first to record the out, then turned and fired a strike to home where catcher Joey Perry applied the tag on Gavula, who was trying to catch the Rams with their guard down.

Butler coach Josh Forbes said Gavula, who had the only two hits for the Tornado, broke for home plate on his own.

“I couldn’t agree more with his decision,” Forbes said. “He was thinking on the fly and it forced their pitcher to make a play.

“Credit Pine-Richland. They made the plays they needed to make and we didn’t.”

Schnur started the game and worked four innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Desmond pitched 2 1/3 innings. He was charged with P-R’s second run when Baxter allowed a run-scoring single to Owen Henne in the top of the seventh.
