Hats off to volunteers

It is appropriate that Easter Sunday kicked off National Volunteer Week.

In Butler County, volunteerism is a strong force in the community, and we should take time to acknowledge those who step up because it is the right thing to do – and encourage others to join in.

Our hats are off to volunteers who make sure people have enough to eat by stocking the shelves at the many local food pantries, stuffing packs for the Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program or delivering Meals on Wheels to housebound seniors.

Youth sports programs are supported by countless volunteers, often in inclement weather, from those on the fields instilling skills to help players tackle sports and life to boosters arranging for fundraisers, snacks for players, and caring for equipment and facilities.

Volunteers are also the heart and soul of scouting, offering Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts opportunities to challenge their young minds. Behind the scenes, leaders and their assistants plan outings and arrange activities to earn the required badges. They sometimes find themselves in a kayak encouraging a reluctant scout to try something new or perhaps trying to sleep on the floor on a field trip surrounded by troop members with boundless energy.

Volunteer opportunities abound. There is something for everyone and every interest. A quick sampling: There are nine libraries in Butler County; service organizations like the Rotary, Lions and Elks; a number of women's clubs and organizations including the Soroptimists; nonprofits like the YMCA; and many churches and religious organizations.

For those who like to be outside, there are groups that help maintain our parks and trails such as the Moraine Preservation Fund; the Moraine, McConnells Mill and Jennings Commission (3MJC); and the Butler County Chapter of the North Country Trail or the Butler-Freeport Trail. Others like members of Allegheny Aquatic Alliance work to keep the Connoquenessing Creek clean.

Fellow employees and businesses through the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania step up to clean parks or put together bicycles. The service work of groups in conjunction with the Butler County Chamber of Commerce provides costumes for kids and completes projects like an accessible launch at Moraine State Park for people with disabilities.

For all those whose efforts keep these and many other worthy charitable projects going, we salute you and thank you.

For readers who have yet to experience the rewards of volunteer service, we encourage you to find your own spot.
