Butler grad Stewart leads Vulcan win

INDIANA — California (Pa.) University senior catcher Justin Stewart enjoyed a big day on the diamond Tuesday as the Vulcan baseball team defeated Indiana (Pa.), 10-7.

Stewart had a home run, single, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in the win. California is 22-9 on the season, 7-5 in PSAC West play.

Mars grad Anderson shining for Pitt

KENT, Ohio — Mars graduate Jack Anderson had two singles and scored a run Tuesday as Pitt’s baseball team defeated Kent State, 12-5.

Anderson is hitting .308 with five homers and 19 RBI for the Panthers (19-12) this season.

Singleton, Simoes get scholar/athlete honors

PITTSBURGH — Butler senior CJ Singleton and Seneca Valley senior Daniel Simoes are among 20 athletes selected to receive the WPIAL/James Collins Scholar/Athlete Award for the 2021-22 academic year.

They were selected from a pool of 142 applicants.

Singleton carries a 4.24 grade point average and has received 10 varsity letters in cross country, track and field, basketball and baseball. He’s won four WPIAL individual titles between cross country and track, along with winning the PIAA cross country title in 2021. He is a five-time all-state and two-time All-America selection.

Simoes carries a 5.18 grade point average and is a four-time letter winner in swimming and diving. He’s captured five WPIAL individual titles in the 100-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 200 free relay and 400 free relay while helping the Raiders win WPIAL and PIAA team titles.
