Butler wins low-scoring affair

With the original game having been rained out Monday, Butler got its chance against Central Catholic at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park Tuesday night.

The Golden Tornado came out on the right side of a pitching showdown, claiming a 3-0 victory over their sectional opponents.

Madden Clement turned in another strong start for Butler (6-0, 3-0), fanning nine and giving up only two hits — both singles — in six innings on the mound.

“He found his fastball and commanded the fastball and blew it right past them,” Butler coach Josh Forbes said.

His counterpart, the Vikings’ Nicholas Robertson, took the loss even after setting down 13 on strikes in 5.2 innings.

“Those are always the best games, to see pitcher’s duels back and forth where you can tell little things win and lose ball games,” Central Catholic coach John Rende said. “We got a couple chances that just didn’t go our way. They (Butler) made a few hits when they needed it and that was the difference.

“It’s great to see two guys come out and battle pitch for pitch.”

After a lull, Brady Gavula pushed Cooper Baxter across on an RBI single in the first, then Kyle Yost added two insurance runs in the Butler sixth.

“That’s exactly what we preach that all the time,” Forbes said. “If we can get runs ... when we’re going back on defense to win a baseball game, we can try to bury teams like that.”

Central Catholic was thwarted trying to steal home in the first and was thrown out trying to score again in the third.

“I thought that was the right call just to maybe spark something,” Rende said of the attempted early swipe. “We sent a guy at home in the third inning just because the offense wasn’t really going ... It just didn’t go our way.”
