Butler grad Stewart shining for Vulcans
ERIE — Butler graduate and California (Pa.) University catcher Justin Stewart continued his hot hitting Monday for the Vulcans, collecting two hits, two RBI and a run scored in a 9-6 loss to Gannon.
Stewart is hitting .324 on the season with a pair of home truns for California, which is 18-8 overall, 4-4 in PSAC West play.
Cubs boxer Adams has fight scheduled
Butler Cubs professional boxer Lucas Adams (2-1-1) will continue his career with a four-round bout April 16 in Moundsville,. W.Va.
Adams will fight Kevin Getsey, a boxer from Ohio masking his pro debut, at the Moundsville Penitentiary.
Schmidt named top AMCC pitcher
ERIE — Freeport graduate and Penn State Behrend softball pitcher Ashleigh Schmidt has been named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Schmidt was 2-0 in the circle last week, giving up two earned runs, allowing eight hits and posting a 1.17 earned run average.
SRU’s Clark named Thrower of Week
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior Trinity Clark has been named PSAC West Track and Field Thrower of the Week.
Clark won the javelin at the Dave Labor Invitational last weekend with a throw of 49.55 meters. She ranks second in all of NCAA Division II in that event.
Pirates defeated in final spring game
CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a 5-1 decision to the Philadelphia Phillies in their final Grapefruit League game of the season Tuesday.
Bryan Reynolds had two hits for the Pirates, improving his batting average to .361 this spring. Kevin Newman hit .333 in Grapefruit League action and Diego Castillo hit .371 with six home runs.
The Pirates were 7-7-4 during the exhibition season and begin the regular season Thursday afternoon in St. Louis.
