Departments quickly extinguish car fire
SLIPPERY ROCK — The engine of a 2008 Volkswagen Golf GTI caught fire outside a mobile home on Davcol Lane around 1 p.m. Tuesday and nearly spread to the deck of the structure.
Mike Slair, first captain at the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company, said the fire departments were able to quickly extinguish the fire, and dispatch downgraded the emergency level soon after crews arrived. No one was injured.
“It did get dispatched as a structure response,” Slair said. “It was approximately 3 feet from deck and 10 feet from structure, but we were able to downgrade it.”
According to Slair, the fire only took about 15 minutes to extinguish, and several of the responding departments were able to disembark shortly after arrival because of the small size of the fire. Slair also said the fire was caused by the engine overheating.
Tyler Ealy, a resident of the home, said the car was in the process of starting when the engine caught fire.
“It just went up in flames,” Ealy said. “No idea why it caught on fire.”
In addition to Slippery Rock VFC, Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, Unionville VFC and Pine Township VFC also responded to the fire.
