Lernerville opener postponed Friday
BUFFALO TWP — Due to forecasted rain and chilly temperatures, Lernerville Speedway has postponed its dirt track racing season opener.
The season was scheduled to open Friday night. It will now open with a Fab4 race program April 8. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m., racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
McNany, Schmidt key Berhrend win
ALLIANCE, Ohio — Freeport graduate Ashleigh Schmidt tossed a complete game, allowing five hits, as Penn State Behrend’s softball team defeated Mount Union, 4-2, in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.
Schmidt threw 63 strikes and 89 pitches. A-C Valley graduate Cami McNany had two RBI in the game.
Behrend (6-7) won the second game, 8-0.
Isherwood shines for SRU tennis
SLIPPERY ROCK — Butler graduate Teddi Isherwood won her seventh consecutive singles match for the Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team Wednesday, defeating Clarion’s Alyson Fisher 6-0. 6-0.
SRU defeated Clarion 7-0 overall in its PSAC West opener.
Butler Countians have big day at track
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Thursday’s harness racing card at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows proved to be a big one for Butler County.
Lady Newton, trained by Bill Bercury and owned by Renee Bercury of Slippery Rock, won the $16,000 Filly & Mare Open Handicap Pace. Guide Di, trained by Steve Schoeffel of Evans City and driven by Brady Brown of Slippery Rock, won his third race in a row.
Racing My Beamer, owned by Terrian Richards of Cranberry Township, won a $9,000 Conditioned Pace.
Pirates, Orioles play to 4-4 tie
BRADENTON, Fla. — The Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles played to a 4-4 tie in Grapefruit League action Thursday.
Bryan Reynolds and Diego Castillo homered for the Pirates, giving them 29 round-trippers this spring. Mars graduate David Bednar pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
