Symphony, MTG collaborate for ‘Guys and Dolls’

One afternoon only

For the first time ever, the Butler County Symphony Orchestra and the Musical Theatre Guild will perform a production side by side. Their performance of “Guys and Dolls” will take place at 3 p.m. April 10 at Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.

The musical follows gangster Sky Masterson and his attempt to take the soul-saving, mission-minded Sergeant Sarah Brown to Havana, Cuba, in order to win a bet.

Stefan Lingenfelter, who plays Masterson, said the show is an American classic from the golden age of musicals.

“He’s Mr. Slick,” he said of his character. “His name is Sky because that’s how he bets. He’s a big-time gambler.”

Lingenfelter added that he’s excited to work with the cast, which includes Sarah Bishop as Sarah Brown, Katy Wayne as showgirl Adelaide, and Jerry Johnston as gambler Nathan Detroit.

“It’s been great. The talent of (Wayne) and (Bishop) is great. It’s been spirited and enjoyable,” he said of the experience. “We’re laughing a lot.”

Bishop said her character is trying to save the souls of gamblers in old New York, when she meets Lingenfelter’s character.

“They have a love/hate relationship. She’s trying to bring sinners to the mission; he has ulterior motives,” she said. “The show is old New York gambling meets ‘10 Things I Hate About You.’”

Bishop said she splits her time between New York City and her hometown of Butler, and she’s happy to be involved in “Guys and Dolls” with so many familiar faces.

“It’s nice to connect with everyone again. The cast is wonderful. I grew up doing theater in Butler, and it’s fun to come back after some training and experience elsewhere,” she said.

John Furman, executive director of the symphony, said he, too, plays a role in the production, and that the collaboration is an experimental and new venture.

“This is the first time we’ve done a concert project with them,” Furman said of MTG. “I think it’s a cool way to combine the talents of Butler. It’s the perfect way to end the season with an upbeat, lighthearted musical.”

Bishop said some songs featured in the performance will be easily recognizable to the people of Butler.

“(The show) is an interesting story about love and the thrill of gambling and relationships between people,” she said. “It will be an interesting opportunity for the people of Butler to see the merging of two mediums together.”

Lingenfelter said he hopes people come see the show to witness these two arts entities teaming up for the first time.

“The symphony is the main focus for this night. Hearing the music will be the main focus. You can close your eyes and listen; what you’ll get is total immersion from the symphony’s music, and you’ll get the plot from us.”
