As the weather warms for spring, locals looking for weekend activities in the Zelienople area won’t have to travel far.

Harmony Lodge No. 429, in collaboration with the Model Train Club of Zelienople, will hold a Spring Open House event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 16 at the Masonic Building on East Beaver Street.

At the same time, next door, the Lions Club of Zelienople will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt in the Zelienople Community Park starting at 11 a.m..

The Model Train Club of Zelienople will exhibit its train display in the Masonic Building, explained Matthew Beahm, a member of the Masonic Lodge Harmony 429 and co-founder of the Model Train Club of Zelienople.

“Dale Krysinski and I started the Train Club (in) fall of last year,” Beahm said. “We have 15 train club members, and we’re always looking for new members. We have regular meetings, at which we exchange information about model trains and how to make scenery and different types of train and track. We all come together and are allowed to meet in the Masonic Building and have our buildings, and make our huge display in the basement of the Masonic Building.”

The group is open to model train enthusiasts of all ages, and last showed off its display at several Zelie events in the fall and winter of 2021, Miracle on Main and Halloween Trick or Treat Night.

“We got well over 1,500 people coming through the doors to look at the train displays, which just shocked all of the train club members,” Beahm said. “We were really happy and it just worked out well.”

Complimentary coffee and specialty “Choo Choo Hot Chocolate” will be available at the event.

“The (hot chocolate) recipe was developed by a train club member and his wife, and it was huge hit during the ‘Polar Express’ exhibit that we had in December,” Beahm said. ” The open house is free admission, and there will be a craft vendor and items for sale, both craft and additional food items.”

Easter Egg hunt

The Lions Club’s annual Easter Egg hunt event will begin promptly at 11 a.m. and is open to children ages 12 and younger. An Easter Bunny will also be present.

Families should bring their own basket or bag to collect eggs in, according to a post on the Zelienople Lions Club’s Facebook page.

Children will be divided by age group to participate, and the event will be held rain or shine.
