Phoenix manufacturer merges with Emlenton plant

The Commodore Corporation has sold its manufactured home plants to Cavco Industries in a project coordinated by the Governor’s Action Team.

Gov. Tom Wolf’s office said Monday that Cavco, one of the largest manufactured home builders in the U.S., will take over Commodore’s two plants in Clarion County and one plant in Allegheny Township, Butler County.

Wolf said the move will create 55 jobs and retain 607 positions over the next three years.

Cavco will continue to invest and expand operations at all three facilities, according to a release from Wolf’s office.

Phoenix-based Cavco, which is one of the larges producers of manufactured homes in the U.S., purchased Commodore Corporation, based in Elkhart, Ind., for $153 million. The deal became official Sept. 24.

In addition to the manufacturing plants in Butler and Clarion counties, Commodore employs 1,200 workers across the Northeast, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions, with retail stores in Indiana and New York, according to acquisition documents.

According to Wolf’s release, Cavco has committed to investing more than $8 million in the three local plants in construction, renovation, equipment and infrastructure costs, the release stated.

“Cavco is excited about the combination of Commodore and Cavco,” said Steve Like, senior vice president for business development at Cavco. “This acquisition allows Cavco to expand its business into the northeastern U.S. housing markets we have not previously served.”

The company received a funding proposal from the state Department of Community and Economic Development for a $220,000 Pennsylvania First grant and a $98,000 workforce development grant to help train workers.

“Having a nationally recognized company like Cavco choose to expand their operations in Pennsylvania sends a very clear message to other businesses about the strength of our manufacturing sector,” Wolf said. “We are pleased to support this expansion project that will create and retain a total of 662 jobs and provide a significant boost to local economics.”

The Governor’s Action Team is comprised of an experienced group of economic development professionals who report directly to the governor and work with businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Pennsylvania.

More than $16.2 billion has been invested in the past seven years of Wolf’s governorship to support 409 completed projects, create more than 45,500 new jobs and retain more than 140,300 existing jobs across the state.

The Clarion County manufacturers are in Shippenville.

Steve Like could not be reached Tuesday for additional comment on the merger.
