Adams Township reaches agreement on proposed GetGo

Adams Township’s board of supervisors Monday unanimously approved plans for a proposed GetGo gas station and convenience store at the corner of Route 228 and Three Degree Road near Mars Area High School and MHY Family Services.

ADAMS TWP — The township’s board of supervisors Monday unanimously approved plans for a proposed GetGo gas station and convenience store at the corner of Route 228 and Three Degree Road near Mars Area High School and MHY Family Services.

The supervisors rejected the proposed GetGo plans in the fall because of concerns over pedestrian safety. GetGo appealed the decision.

Monday’s vote came after a compromise was reached with GetGo.

“As the appeal went through with GetGo and they filed a lawsuit back at us, we decided to all get in a room and figure out how we could all resolve this problem without it going down an avenue that was going to cost a lot of people money, including our residents,” board of supervisors chairman Russ Ford said. “We came to a proposal on the things that we wanted to ask them to potentially do. They agreed to every one of them, because they want to be a good partner in the township.”

The new proposal includes agreements from GetGo to fund the refurbishment and construction of a pedestrian walkway through its property and across 228 toward Mars Area High School and construct sidewalks from its site along the west side of Three Degree Road.

GetGo agreed to donate $16,400 to fund the crosswalks and also agreed to donate $5,000 to the Adams Township Community Park. The funds will be put toward resurfacing of the playground at the park.

“It was inevitable where this was going to go in the end, so I think it ended up being a very, very good deal,” Ford said. “We’re hoping tonight to finalize and put this to bed.”

Information was not yet available about when GetGo would begin moving forward with construction or the status of any future Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board hearings. A previously scheduled hearing to discuss whether the proposed GetGo would be able to obtain a liquor license had been canceled in January.

Update on military banners

Chairman Russ Ford gave an update on the township’s military banner program, which began in November 2021. Banners can feature the faces and names of active-duty and veteran family members and friends and cost $125.

Those joining the program get one 24-by-36 inch banner that is displayed in the Community Park, two 12-inch-by-18-inch yard banners for personal display, and bracket and mounting hardware.

Ford said the park now displays 23 military banners and added that Mars had expressed interest in joining the program.

“It seems like it is really starting to catch hold,” Russ said. “People are seeing it and finding it exciting, and I think we are going to continue to see it grow.”
