Weekend brings 8 inches of snow, brisk winds
Snow as deep as 8 inches was left on the ground Saturday following a winter storm that began late Friday night.
No power outages and only a few vehicle accidents resulted from the storm, which is expected to clear out and usher in warmer temperatures next week.
By late Saturday morning, weather watchers reported 7 1/2 inches of snow in Valencia, 7 inches in Cabot, 7 3/4 inches in Seven Fields, 6 inches a mile south of Butler and 8 inches in Butler, said Lee Hendricks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
Later Saturday night, winds chilled the region Saturday night with temperatures dipping into the teens and winds estimated at speeds of up to 30 mph.
According to Hendricks, a 15-mile-per-hour wind combined with a temperature of 15 degrees results in a windchill of 0 degrees. Meanwhile, a 15-mile-per-hour wind with 11 degree temperatures produces a windchill of minus 5 degrees, he said.
The forecast showed continued cold conditions Sunday night with expectations of scattered snow showers and more below-freezing temperatures.
According to forecasts, Butler County could see a high of 50 degrees Monday, kick starting a warmer week altogether.
High temperatures from Monday through Saturday are expected to stay above 50 degrees with Thursday’s forecast showing a possible high of 66 degrees.
