Here’s a great local way to help the Ukrainian people

It's probably not an exaggeration to say that most people have been horrified by the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine, but also awed by the courage of the Ukrainian people and their president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

But as is often the case during world events that cause suffering, many often wonder how they can help.

There are probably numerous national efforts being undertaken to raise money to help the people of Ukraine as well as ways to divest holdings from companies that benefit Russia.

However, there's at least one local endeavor in the county to help the Ukrainians that combines food and fun with a fantastic cause.

The Lyndora Hotel — which is owned by the Pawk family, who are Ukrainian descendants — will host a Wednesday night fundraiser starting at 4 p.m. that will go hand-in-hand with the site's regular Wednesday Open Mic Night.

The event will include the sale of carryout halupki, pierogies and kiffles, a flaky bread similar to a croissant. There will also be a basket raffle and the sale of T-shirts that say "Stand With Ukraine."

Donations will also be accepted, and the site's regular menu and bar will also be available.

Those who drop by to provide a donation should make a check out to "Brother's Brother Foundation" and write "Ukraine relief" in the check's notes section.

The hotel chose the Brother's Brother Foundation because it is based in Pittsburgh and 100% of funds raised by the group go to those in the line of fire in Ukraine or the 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees in Poland and Romania.

Supplies paid for by the donations could include everything from medical supplies to hygiene kits and blankets.

This is a wonderful idea, and a great way for county residents to get involved in the Ukrainians' fight against the invasion from Russia.

Although the attack against Ukraine is currently being fought by that nation's people, an unprovoked invasion by a brutal dictator will eventually affect us all, whether it's by soaring gas prices or long-term world instability.

We greatly admire the bravery of the Ukrainian people, and are glad to see a local organization stepping up to help them in their fight.

For anyone looking for a way to support the Ukrainian people, this event would be a great start.
